How was I supposed to know that creating a function containing a few lines of code and called from a single call-site is according to you considered bad practice compared to inlining the few lines of code?

There is _xpak_close with a body of 1 line in file xpak.c.

  2. Your coding style increases the probability of coding style errors. I have created a new pull request to fix the style errors: https://github.com/gentoo/portage-utils/pull/13

libq/tree: ensure meta fields are clear when not set For some reason we went with uncleared pointers. Probably because we only requested things that should/would exist. However, for sanity, and probably bug #701470, return NULL pointers for anything not set (in metadata). I thought that by "unconditional" you meant to pull cython[pypy3] even when building lxml without pypy3 support.

Could you make the dep unconditional instead, please? Or I can just do it if you prefer ;-).

I am afraid I don't understand why it should be unconditional, so I am unable to make such a change to this pull request.

qsize: report the actual disk usage of packages Files installed by some packages are using hard links in order to save disk space. In such a case, the real size of the package on the disk isn't a plain sum of the sizes of its files, because multiple paths map to the same inode number. This patch modifies qsize to report the actual disk usage of a package by summing the sizes of unique inodes belonging to the package. The implementation uses libq/set, which performs reasonably well even for packages containing thousands of files. Tested on an ext4 filesystem. Before: $ qsize mesa media-libs/mesa: 136 files, 31 non-files, 2.2G After: $ qsize mesa media-libs/mesa: 136 files, 31 non-files, 1012.1M

qsize: report the actual disk usage of packages

 struct qsize_opt_state {  	size_t num_all_files, num_all_nonfiles, num_all_ignored; 	uint64_t num_all_bytes;++	set *inodes; }; +/* Returns whether the dev,inode pair is a new pair that hasn't been seen so far */+static bool add_inode(struct qsize_opt_state *state, dev_t dev, ino_t inode) {+	char key[2*sizeof(unsigned long long) + 1 + 2*sizeof(unsigned long long) + 1];+	assert(sprintf(key, "%llx/%llx", (unsigned long long)dev, (unsigned long long)inode) < (ssize_t)sizeof(key));

I have added -Wformat-overflow=2 -Wformat-truncation=2 to a non-public project I am working on right now and it passed compilation without any false positives so I am going to keep these new warning flags in the default list of compiler flags.

Thanks for suggesting it!

With CFLAGS as in the Stack Overflow question, with GCC 9.2 and char key[>=4], neither "%llu/%llu" nor "%1llu/%1llu" is able to detect an overflow.

It turns out that we would need to add -Wformat-overflow=2 -Wformat-truncation=2 to CFLAGS in the Makefile. I wanted to update this pull request to do so and remove the assertion from qsize.c, but that would make C files other than qsize.c generate many false positives.

Unfortunately, clang does not understand those warning options.

The statement I have written previously ("Neither gcc nor clang can perform such a complex compile-time check") unfortunately stands to be true and thus I refuse to remove the assertion from qsize.c in this pull request. You can merge the pull request and then immediately easily patch the code to remove the assertion from the code if you do not like my style of thinking.

enqueueWriteBuffer: Initialize host buffer to obtain accurate measurement When a host buffer is passed as a source into enqueueWriteBuffer(), a memcpy() is used by OpenCL. memcpy() is optimized to copy zero pages. instead let the compiler at compile-time calculate it is going to fit. Recent GCC do this, informing you about the silent truncation that would happen as warning.

Hi. Can you please post how you managed to get GCC print the warning? For completeness/precision, it would be nice if you also posted the C code which produces the warning.

instead let the compiler at compile-time calculate it is going to fit. Recent GCC do this, informing you about the silent truncation that would happen as warning

I tried GCC 9.2.0 and there is no warning (neither for sprintf nor for snprintf). Do you mean GCC 10, which hasn't been released yet?

GCC 9.2.0 converts the call from sprintf to __sprintf_chk, which receives the compile-time size of the print buffer and fails at runtime (not at compile-time).

foo/bar: 12 unique files, 2 non-files, 5M bar/baz: 14 files, 10 unique files, 2 non-files, 7M (for this style perhaps leave the default to be X files, and only mention unique when there are)

Ok. Should I create a new pull request for this (after the current pull request is merged), or update the current pull request?

No, it would not be cheaper, because:

  • The sprintf buffer (variable: key) takes no CPU instructions to allocate because it is a stack variable with a constant compile-time size
  • At -O2 optimization level, gcc will automatically inline the static add_inode function into its single call-site

I believe you are paying attention to the wrong details in the code.

If sprintf in libc is implemented correctly then this assert never aborts the program.

If sizeof(key) wasn't sufficient for "%llx%llx" than snprintf would return the number of characters which would have been written to the string if enough space had been available, the content of key would be invalid and qsize would print an invalid result without the user knowing that the result is incorrect. Neither gcc nor clang can perform such a complex compile-time check.

If the assertion aborts the program, which should be impossible, the user will be saved from seeing an invalid result printed by qsize to the terminal and saved from acting based on false numbers.

I see. The entry cost to C++ for C programmers is lower when focusing on features that C++ has in common with C. For example, there is no need to use the class keyword in the code because C++ understands the struct keyword just as well as C, and the only difference between class and struct in C++ is the default access mode to the fields of the data type. An issue for ease of entry to C++ is that hash-sets and hash-maps have an unusual syntax for defining the hash function for user data types in the std namespace - but fortunately sorted sets/maps do not have such weird syntax. Sorted sets/maps can in certain cases perform slower than hashed ones, O(log(N)) vs O(1), but the sorted ones are easier as a learning startpoint.

Ok, I will update the patch to use libq/set and update the commit comment.

In relation to this subject, in general it is extra work to develop and maintain an internal list/map/set implementation in C in any project that does not have a good reason to do so. C++ provides type-safe array-lists, linked-lists, and sorted or hashed maps&sets, and has a string type that automatically frees memory when the string variable goes, directly or indirectly, out of scope. Have you been thinking about converting some of the code from C to C++? For example, the first step in converting qsize.c to qsize.cc would most likely entail just adding extern "C" to header files in the project.

I implemented a version using sprintf+libq/set as you mentioned. The performance of qsize texlive-fontsextra is:

  • Without inodes patch: 60 milliseconds
  • This patch: 68 ms
    • IPC=1.96 (instructions per clock according to perf stat)
  • sprintf+libq/set: 320 ms
    • IPC=0.55, mainly due to stalled-cycles-backend
    • according to perf record, add_set_unique consumes 73% of time when qsize is compiled with -O2
