You're using an older version of Dark-WhatsApp. Update to v2.16.1 and everything will be back to normal.

Describe the change you'd like

I'd like to be able to see the latest commit without having to click on the toggle button.

Additional context

This action can be reversed to hide the latest commit (not sure why anyone would want that) when toggled.

I already made the userstyle for it, just not sure how to name it or where to put it. It doesn't need GHD to function, so I ended up dropping dark from the name on my local userstyle.

Here's how it looks:

One of the downsides could be very long commit messages. This can be worked around by adding max-height to the message details, preferably customizable, since GitHub seems to be able to show the entire message without truncating it.

IMO defeats the purpose of this PR in its entirety.

There is only so much you can do with CSS. I traded "proper look" for consistency because the former doesn't look good, and is actually fairly annoying to use with projects like the Linux kernel.

No. The idea was to be able to see commit summary so that you can compare it with the file(s) in the file table. SHA value was quite literally useless and made no sense, even more so since it wasn't being shown in the file table.

telling me that a message is available and not being able to see it unless I remove the style or disable its options seems to add to the weirdness.

Again, I didn't push the commit that was shown in the gif. The way you would see the message in first iteration of this PR when | 📝 available is by opening the commit diff. It's just a hack, and I don't expect anyone to use it, and if they do then I would expect them to understand the pros and cons. Second iteration was much closer to "the real deal", but it's no longer necessary.

-- I'm closing this PR since this functionality is available as a feature preview. It's way better than my workaround, and I'll reopen the PR should GitHub decides to revert and/or change it.

That was intended, which I agree doesn't look "good", but it's consistent when browsing the repository.

To see the actual commit body message I need to disable the main option showLatestCommit

I didn't push the commit that would show commit message when you click on the toggle. Also, that pseudo-element is misaligned for some reason. Perhaps something changed in GitHub's code after I committed my changes and that's why you didn't see it the same way I do.

-- All in all, this PR doesn't seem to be necessary any longer thanks to the new feature preview.

I vote for removing them after some amount of time. Stylus' defaults to updating every 24 hours, although some users keep it disabled (I do, too), but with that we could update @updateURL fields and the migration will be "forced". We could also add some sort of alert that styles will be merged and deleted (in a week/month/etc), or perhaps not deleted but just obsolete/deprecated. LMK what you think about that.

short of maintaining a separate fork for GitHub Dark with all of these built in.

I don't wanna touch GHD -- that thing scares me! 😄

The options would indeed be much cleaner, but there is also backwards-compatibility factor I think. Ultimately you could have both stylus and USo preprocessors in separate versions of GHD, one customizable and the other not customizable. Pretty much how I do my userstyles. One issue with customizable version of GHD is that it could take a while to compile to CSS due to how large GHD is whenever an option is changed.

Seems like something is wrong with Stylus. Changing the key fixed it on my second browser that was having this issue.

Try the following:

Delete Dark-WhatsApp
Install version 2.16.0
Set your chat background options
Upgrade to the newest version

If this doesn't help either (the invert will reset to default value), I'll improve chat background options in the v2.17.0 release even though that was planned for v3.0.0. The invert will be at 0 by default, and chat background image will be the one from native dark mode.
