"What's New" formatting wrong/missing

Hi @runofthemill ,

Yes, exactly. But in fact, it’s an error caused by VS Code. The error started to happen with the latest VS Code release, with a lot of other extensions too.

It appears something has changed in VS Code internals (probably because the recent changes for remote development), creating breaking changes for extension developers. Then, they updated the API and extensions need to update as well. You can find more details on issues like this (https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/89038) and related issues.

The VS Code team created another issue to track extensions that have adopted the new API (https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/97962), and I asked if they will release the new API as stable in the next monthly release, but I didn’t have an answer yet .

Thanks for reporting.

Autorefresh if file ReadOnly/Write mode is modified

Hello,

would be nice to have an automatic refresh of the status if the mode "ReadOnly/Write" of the file is modified. Currently need to change the tabpage and comes back to update the status. This is important that the status is always up to date, so that I can have confidence in this status and not always switch the tabpages to be sure I've an updated status.

gtags: directory '' not found

Hi @vintprox ,

Where / when do you see this error message? Which command are you running?

The extension depends on these tools working properly (installed and configured as described in README.md) on you machine, so I suggest you to run them via shell, to make sure it is being recognised by VS Code.

  1. Open a shell terminal
  2. Navigate to your project's folder.
  3. Run gtags (no params)
  4. It should create 3 files named GTAGS, GPATH and GRTAGS
  5. If not, something is not correct in the installation/settings
  6. If yes, run global -f relativePath/someOfYourFile.pas
  7. It shoud list every method/function inside that file
  8. If not, something is not correct in the installation/settings
  9. If yes, for some reason VS Code doesn't recognise the settings/PATH.

I don't know about Linux, but I suppose it works similar to MacOS on this matter, so I guess some of the tips in #24 should similar to you.

Hope this helps

Contextual Structure for Projects

That’s great!

I know about that extension, it appears to work great too, specially if you are a Workspace centric user. In my case, I almost don’t use 😄 .

The grouping idea is what this issue is all about. I already played a bit on how it would work, but just for fun/testing the APIs. I think it should be the next big feature for the extension, but no ETA.

If you change your mind, feel free to evaluate when it’s ready.

Contextual Structure for Projects

Hi @adeptdeveloper ,

I’m not sure, but based on your scenario, I think you already have this, natively, in VS Code 😬 . Have you tried Multi-root Workspaces?

Each one of your “client workspace” could be a Multi-root Workspace, composed by each “App”. After created, just save each Multi-root workspace as a new Project on the extension.

Maybe, in the end, you don’t need this Projects grouping feature at all.

Hope this helps

Bookmarks set with repository gets lost when using checkout between branches

I set bookmarks inside functions from legacy codes that have actions in if blocks and it works really well, but unfortunatelly when using checkout between branches the bookmarks get all lost.

The ideal solution would be to return the bookmarks that were set in a specific branch when checked out.

Bookmarks set with repository gets lost when using checkout between branches

Hi @weidmaster ,

It seems you are asking the same as #298, which was closed in favor of #177, (a broader idea).

As an alternative (also suggested in #298), if you don’t use Workspaces (multi-root folders) you could save the bookmarks in the project, using the "bookmarks.saveBookmarksInProject“ setting, and commit the .vscode/bookmarks.json file in the repo. So, when you checkout a branch, it restore its bookmarks. Doing so, each branch will have its own bookmarks.

Otherwise, please upvote #177.

Hope this helps

Git changes on projects at a glance

I get it! Show this info for each project, not only the current (which VS Code already provides).

Well, I think it’s doable. I just wonder about the time it would take to detect/calculate the info (asynchronous communication to remote repo) depending on the number repos you have.

But I’m sure two things wouldn’t be possible today (lack of API), at least based on your design, which is pretty good, btw :+1:

  • Right aligned info
  • Colored info

Thank you for your suggestion

I’m not sure I understand when you say “include information about branch and/or additions/removals”? Do you mean the project to be saved for a branch, or simply provide information, in VS Code, about the active branch and additions/removals from the remote?

Could you please provide more details about it?

The git.baseFolders setting expects Windows like paths in OS X

The projectManager.git.baseFolders setting on Mac OS X does not work with traditional OS X paths, like ~/my/projects. It only works if Windows like paths are provided, like $home\\my\\projects. This is very non-intuitive and there is no mention of this in the docs either.

The git.baseFolders setting expects Windows like paths in OS X

Hi @AbhiramH ,

It works, but it does not support the ~ symbol (because it is a *nix feature). Instead, you must use another variable called $home, which I created to be platform independent.

So, you can use something like this, and it will work:

    "projectManager.git.baseFolders": [
        "$home/Documents/GitHub",
        "/Volumes/AnotherDisk/sources",
    ],

This variable is mentioned in the README file (https://github.com/alefragnani/vscode-project-manager#edit-projects)

Use a special variable called $home while defining any path. It will be replaced by the HOME folder.

Hope this helps

@Yevgeniuz It shouldn’t display any “Path does not exist” message at all. Have you re-saved the remote projects, so the extension could its path properly in projects.json?

@wongjn This is not a supported scenario. If you need the extension to discover git/etc projects inside the remote, you have to install/activate it inside that remote. But in this case, you lose your local references. Unfortunately, you can’t have both.

Bookmarks overlap with breakpoints

I've noticed a few problems between breakpoints and bookmarks. Ubuntu 20.04, VS Code 1.45.1

If you have a breakpoint set and then use ctrl + alt + k to make a bookmark on the same line the icons overlap. The bookmark is underneath the breakpoint.

If a bookmark is set, you cannot set a breakpoint on the same line with the mouse, only with a hotkey. Similar, if there is a breakpoint and bookmark on the same line you cannot unset the breakpoint.

Not a high priority but does get annoying every once and a while.

Hi @DerekCresswell ,

This has already been reported in #56, but it’s a VS Code issue, and I’m still waiting for them to fix/properly support.

Unfortunately, no ETA from VS Code team.

Hi @gorankav ,

Thank you for your suggestion, but the idea for the extension is to give you easy/fast access to your projects, not how they work or what they contain. I guess adding template files, or things like this, end up becoming out of scope.

I guess, in your case, you should try using Snippets or some other Templating extension would be a better idea.

Hope this helps

I'm guessing this happens for the same reason #377, because other users has reported that SSH was working with the latest release, so I guess they were using MacOS/Linux.

Support open remote projects from your local installation

@Christilut about opening issues on VS Code repo, I have a lot already 😁. From time to time I ask/require something. Sometimes via GitHub issues, sometimes on Slack or Gitter channel. But, in this case, it may not be a VS Code issue, but from the remote extension.

I’m thinking about the better way to handle this, but it’s hard to me because I don’t use those scenarios (remotes) that much, and I don’t have computers/VMs available. It’s the same difficulty when I had only a Windows PC and wanted to make something work on MacOS 😞 .

Opening WSL/WSL2 from local installation (Host) is not working

With the release of #345, you are now able to save/open remote projects (Docker and SSH) right from your local installation.

But it appears, based on reports, that WSL/WSL2 is not working.

This issue is to track specifically the support for WSL/WSL remote projects.

how do i use this? how do i create a bookmark?

Hi,

Just out of curiosity, Ctrl + Shift + P is for Windows/Linux. On MacOs you should use Cmd + Shift + P. You can also use F1, on any OS. At least on my keyboard layout.

That’s the main reason I don’t add this complexity/dependency to my extension’s documentation anymore, neither keyboard shortcuts.

Imagine they change/add other ways, or add more OS, like ChromeOS? I would be forced to update every extension, and I don’t want that.

Hope you understand.

Hi @aplatypus ,

The VS Code limitation still remains today. I understand your point, and I agree that "it should work", but I can't do anything about it. So, I suggest you to upvote/comment on VS Code repo issues that talks about it.

I found at least 3:

  • https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/78394
  • https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/84940.

The good point is, when VS Code fixes this issue, I probably don't have to do anything on my side.

Isn’t doing because the extension never had no intention to be tied/support Git or any other SCM 😄 .

If you need bookmarks assigned to some point in time (Git commit), adding it to that commit, as you pointed out above, is your best alternative, until #177 is released.

Hi @SailorMax ,

That’s one of the ideas behind #283 , but as the panels customization is still in preview stage, it will have to wait.

I guess VS Code will make it in stable API in the next release (I’m being optimistic). Just after that I will take a look on the API, and how I could add it to the extension.

Message: "The Bookmark 1 is not defined"

Hi @Daijobou ,

This has changed in the latest release. Prior to this, this message was displayed in the Status Bar, maybe you didn’t noticed.

I just changed to use the same location other Info/error messages are displayed, like No bookmark found. TBH, I’m not sure why it was using the Status Bar.

There is no way to prevent this message from appearing, as hasn’t before this change. Unless you think no message at all should be displayed, if you try to jump to some undefined/untoggled bookmark. It could be added via settings.

Hope this helps

Support open remote projects from your local installation

@Yevgeniuz The path is returned from VSCode, so as you described it says: ”vscode-remote://wsl+Ubuntu-18.04/home/user/projects/projectX", and I just use this path to tell VS Code to open it.

When you changed to vscode-remote:\...., the extension doesn’t recognize it as remote anymore.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a Windows machine available to install WSL, so I can’t test/validate ideas. I’ll think about how we could validate this WSL issue.

Support open remote projects from your local installation

Well, both installations won’t share the projects, so this scenario won’t be possible.

If you install it on remote, the projects will be stored on that remote, and unavailable on Host. You will be able to switch projects on that remote, but only when connected to it. This was the desired scenario reported in #323.

The idea for this release is to allow you to save projects on Host, projects that refers to remotes (Docker, WSL and SSH), and be able to open them, directly from Project Manager commands. So, you can, on you local machine, connect to any remote project.

Unfortunately, merging host and remote projects isn’t available, and I guess not even possible, based on my researches on VS Code APIs. I didn’t find any API (at all) available to work with the VS Code Remote extension 😞 .

Hope this helps

Support open remote projects from your local installation

Hi @Maraat and @Yevgeniuz ,

I’m not sure, but maybe SSH open folders on its own way.

I had found this issue https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-remote-release/issues/473 , talking about a different remote-containers.openFolder command, but since the basic vscode.openFolder Command did work on Docker, I expected it to work for WSL and SSH. It appears WSL doesn’t.

I’ll look a bit more in WSL repo for info.

Thank you for the infos

Support open remote projects from your local installation

Hi @Christilut ,

I can say how I did on Docker, and that’s how I expect to work on SSH and WSL.

The extension now supports save Remotes as Projects, just like regular folders/workspaces. Do you remember previous releases when I disabled the Save Project command? It was re-enabled and now it supports saving remotes too.

So, that’s how it works with Docker:

  • Open Remote extension Side Bar
  • Connect to some Docker Container remote project
  • VS Code will connect to that Dockerize project (in same or new window)
  • Use the Project Manager: Save Project to save the current Dockerized project
  • Now, the Project Manager Side Bar will show the newly created Dockerized project (different icon, btw)
  • Close the Dockerized project, returning to some normal VS Code project
  • Open that previously saved project, via Project Manager
  • It will automatically connect to that Dockerized project

I’m not sure how the Remote SSH extension works, but I suggest you to Save Project first, instead of fixing/updating the rootPath in projects.json for yourself. For Dockerized projects, the rootPath has really weird Values (I guess are the Container ID).

Hope this helps

Webview is unable to load resources while reconstructing after a reload

I just noticed the same issue while updating two of my extensions. I'm with VS Code 1.45 Stable and VS Code 1.46 Insiders, on MacOS. Loading on Windows, worked perfectly.

The failed resources are a css and a png file I use. Another remote png loads fine.

But, it only happens when the WebView is loaded at extension's activation, with in my case is defined as activationEvents: *. If I close the WebView and call it again, it works.

It's a bit weird, because I have the same WebView on other extensions and it is working fine. I thought it could be something related to recent updates I made on this Webview, but if I install older versions of the same extension (using the VS Code Extension feature), it also fails.

Just noticed I didn't embrace https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_39#_warning-if-webviews-dont-use-webviewaswebviewuri-for-local-resources yet. I'm still loading local resources using { scheme: "vscode-resource" }. Could it be connected somehow?

I'll try to update, and post here if something new appear.

Review Whats New page content structure and elements emphasis

This is totally a minor complaint..

  • The "Whats New" page that opens once every update never contains anything new. I've stopped trying to read it several months ago and at this point, most people probably consider it spam.
  • The use of bold fonts and highlighted text all over the page doesn't actually emphasize important parts of the document, but seemingly random words. This makes the page harder to read and look a bit unprofessional.
