Provide a homebrew formula for OSX

My tap repo at https://github.com/incidentist/homebrew-nyxt now has an initial Nyxt formula as well. See the README there for updated instructions. It's initial in the sense that it builds and runs (!) but it throws some funky warnings, does not respond to most keystrokes, and every website fails with TLS Certificate Error. I am following the Nix discussions here, here and here. Basically the Nix folks are doing a great job of patching things to run on Darwin, and I will try to bring those patches into the homebrew formula until they are available upstream.

Dead-buffer implementation improvements

I get this all the time when testing stuff for my nx-notmuch thingy, which is basically a bunch of very minimal internal buffers. Is there anything I could do to avoid this?

@incidentist I've tried to run the build, but it failed. Created a separate issue: https://github.com/incidentist/homebrew-nyxt/issues/1

Provide a homebrew formula for OSX

I'm working on a Nyxt homebrew formula that synthesizes previous attempts. As a first step, I've made a webkitgtk formula that builds cleanly on my 2017 MBP running Big Sur: https://github.com/incidentist/homebrew-nyxt . macOS folks can help by running brew install --build-from-source incidentist/nyxt/webkitgtk, waiting awhile for it to build (it took 85 minutes for me) and letting me know what happens (as well as your hardware/software config).

My level of expertise here is pretty low. I'm mostly blindly synthesizing the Nix package definitions into Homebrew formula. If it looks like I'm missing something obvious, I probably am.

Just delete the last character, and reinput it, it's a bug in the prompt buffer, will fix :-D

Running nyxt on ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Whenever I copy a URL (for e.g. https://www.braveclojure.com/core-functions-in-depth/) into the system clipboard to paste into nyxt (by using set-url and then paste), the url is sent as a query string to duckduckgo.com. How do I directly navigate to the URL without being routed through ddg?

Building in Mac as of now feels a bit painfull, I think the best and easiest way to get through this, is by adding this to brew repo, having a lot of problems building atm.

follow-hint issue

I can confirm the issue on my company's Jenkins as well. Do this is probably happening on other Web sites for others as well.

I am using the Ubuntu 20 deb package, I'll probably try to build from master at some point.

Just wanted to confirm the issue is not on @hajovonta end.

Keep up the good work Atlas :).

An activity tracker for Nyxt?

I'm happy that such a seemingly useless and awkward article motivates you! This also leaves some food for thought for @jmercouris, since he manifested scepticism towards the importance of the referred article back then.

Well, sometimes things resonate differently with different people :-)

Actually, it would be really cool if I could help coding this. I am just not sure if it is too challenging on the technical side. If someone is willing to mentor me would be awesome.

Feel free to write me if you feel the need. I have, or used to have, Nyxt wrapped around my head.

I had a cursory look about your background. I think people who deal/have dealt with maths and books from Elon Lages Lima have the endurance to learn and accomplish their goals. I've been there too, and I even found a typo in one of his books (https://math.stackexchange.com/questions/2549140/definition-of-meagre-set)!

At the end of the day, it's all about "bunda na cadeira" (to quote Clóvis de Barros Filho) and finding a balance in the quest. Boa sorte!

pull request commentatlas-engineer/nyxt

Update CSS colors for coherence.

To effectively do this though, we would probably need a global, or to at least leverage the *browser*, is that smart? I don't know.

Something like

(defclass theme ()
  ((color-of-x "xyz"))))

I kind of think that we should use a CSS class to describe all colors. So we can have slots for each color, or each type of element we want to color. This could then bubble down to the default values of the style slots, unless explicitly overridden.

With regards to these colors changed, I'll have to take a look at them. I selected the colors very carefully.

Add command `show-clipboard`

While @jmercouris was instructing me on how to solve issue #765 , a new idea for a command emerged: the show-clipboard.

The command should indicate in the Nyxt mini-buffer what is inside the clipboard. The step-by-step to solve this might be similar to PR #1501. For instance, the (echo ...) expression could be used.

The tags "good first issue" and "feature" might be appropriate.

Update CSS colors for coherence.

This changes our hex-based CSS to named colors.

Why?

  • Named colors are easier to comprehend.
  • I've started doing systematic Nyxt theming and understood that the set of colors we use is quite small, but one cannot see ~the forest for the trees~ all this because of hex-valued colors. Thus, this patch is an improvement to make theming somewhat easier cognitively.
    • Adding to that, I plan to simply search for color names we use after we discuss and merge this patch. This will allow to make a default Nyxt color theme to derive other themes from, e.g., easily do themes like in the macro I've done.

Things To Discuss

  • @jmercouris, I've adjusted some colors 2-20 RBG points away from initial hex values. Is that alright? I feel it is, because it yields more coherence in the long term, but you can prove me wrong :)
  • Maybe we should include the aforementioned bit of configuration into the upstream? This can even become a cool Common Settings part to quickly style Nyxt to one's liking :)

How Has This Been Tested

It wasn't. Colors are not too far, though. Shouldn't cause much trouble.

How's that looking?

Void Linux: Load libssl and libfixposix versioned library files at runtime

Describe the bug Im building next for void linux using xbps-src. It builds correcty. libressl and libfixposix packages for void provide a versioned library file (for example libfixposix.so.3) but when installed, next tries to load the library file without the version number (libfixposix.so). The correct symlink (libfixposix.so => libfixposix.so.3) is provided by the -devel packages which include development files for the libraries in question.

As a workaround I had to add libfixposix-devel and libressl-devel to the next package dependencies. Development dependencies should not be needed when installing the binary release of next from the Void Linux repositories.

To fix the bug next should load the libraries from the versioned library file at runtime.

Precise recipe to reproduce the issue I'll comment as soon as i push the package template to my void-packages fork

Information

  • OS name+version: Void Linux
  • Kernel name+version: : Linux 5.2
  • Desktop environment / Window manager name+version: i3wm not related
  • Next version (from =M-x next-version= or =next --version=): 1.3.2
  • How you installed Next (Guix pack, package manager, build from source): built from source
  • SBCL version (if built from source): 1.5.6
  • WebKitGTK+ / PyQt-Webengine version: 2.26.0

Site with ads not displayed correctly

Describe the bug I have set my zoom level to 1.6. If I visit www.spiegel.de it first displays correctly (although it loads slowly and only at the very end it switches to the desired zoom level). But the very moment I use one of the buffer commands (for instance C-x b) the advertisement to the left starts to cover the content. I only get back to the correct display by reloading the page (takes time) or going down to a very low zoom level and than back to the desired level again (takes time too ...)

Information

  • OS name+version: Ubuntu bionic (18.04)
  • Kernel name+version: 4.15.0-72-generic
  • Graphics card and driver: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (rev 07)
  • Desktop environment / Window manager name+version: GNOME Shell 3.28.4-0ubuntu18
  • Next version (from =M-x next-version= or =next --version=): 1.3.4
  • How you installed Next (Guix pack, package manager, build from source): deb-package
  • SBCL version (if built from source):
  • WebKitGTK+ / PyQt-Webengine version: webkit2gtk-4.0

Closing this because it does work on the latest Nyxt. Additionally, indeed we have another issue for an adblocker :-)
