pull request commenth5bp/main.css

feat: SCSS

Using web standard technology throughout the process is by nature more generic than using a pre-processor. Not everyone knows about SASS/SCSS etc. so there's one less hurdle for people when working with this project.

If this were Bootstrap or even if there was any actual benefit to authoring in sass I would do so. As I mentioned previously I initially intended to implement what you're proposing and rejected it after having done the work.

See #3

Okay! Months later I return from the wilderness.

This issue was originally about pre-processors and all that and after kicking the tires on it, it seems like a waste of time, so this is now simpler.

Break main.css into muliple files combine them back together to create voltron the new main.css copy the component files to ./dist/ so that people can ingest individual files as needed This will be the 1.0.0 release 🥇

I literally built the project using sass and decided it wasn't worth it.

feat: SCSS

You can already import just the parts you need (we have always shipped the component parts in addition to the bundled main.css) and if an end user wants to convert to sass they just change the file names. I went through this whole line of reasoning and abandoned it as not worth the overhead and not generic enough for all users.

build(css): use sass

This approach doesn't make sense to me. It's just extra authoring steps. We author main.css in another repo, so exposing it like it should be editable here is confusing. Also, as I said in the main.css repo there isn't any benefit to using sass with these files. I was literally searching for features I could use to justify it and there were none, so I abandoned the idea.

I would potentially be interested in offering this an an option for end users using the create-html5-boilerplate project.

feat: SCSS

As your PR shows, there is no real benefit to using SCSS here in this project. I abandoned that idea when I initially created this project (You can see how I removed "scss" from the issue titled in issue #3 because it doesn't do anything useful. They're just CSS files renamed. IF it actually made a difference I would do it, but it doesn't so I would prefer to keep this as vanilla CSS.

Dependabot works well in create-html5-boilerplate, may be useful here too as for me.

I'm happy to release early and often with this as we add more features. I'd like to release 0.2.0. This issue will track those activities.

@vltansky do you want to open an issue that describes the question you have about testing? We can focus on fixing that and do "help wanted" if we need to. I'll work on merging this in.

ci: test on node 10 and 14

Guess we should run tests on the current (14) version and 10. Maybe even test on node 6?

as this is what we write in the readme:

works wherever node and npm work. The only requirements are for npx, which requires npm version 5.2 or greater and npm init which requires an npm version greater than 6.0.

feat: remove jquery

 const onLoad = async (targetDir, version, argv) => {     }     lang = langChoice || "";   }+  let { jquery } = await prompts({+    type: "confirm",+    name: "jquery",+    message: "Remove jQuery?",

I think it would be two different questions. I'm unsure if I want to add the option to add jQuery in 8+, but if we were to offer the option to add it, it would be different language ("would you like to add jQuery?") Removing jQuery can only happen if it's in the project. So this question should only be asked for older versions.

I didn't merge this in directly. I merged #19. Your history on that pull request must have included the hash referenced here. I think we need to make sure we're using branches for this sort of work.

feat: remove jquery question

This is a proposal. I'd like to hear what you think about it and how should it work.

$ node index.js ./out/jq
? Remove jQuery? » (y/n)
$ node index.js ./out/s
√ Remove jQuery? ... yes
√ html5-boilerplate@latest copied to D:\projects\create-html5-boilerplate\out\s in 1.59 seconds . Have fun!

result (v7.3.0):

<!-- Add your site or application content here -->
<p>Hello world! This is HTML5 Boilerplate.</p>
<script src="js/vendor/modernizr-3.8.0.min.js"></script>

<script src="js/plugins.js"></script>
<script src="js/main.js"></script>

Also, I'd be happy if you could review regex for removing jQuery:

/(<script>window\.jQuery.*<\/script>|<script src=".*jquery.*<\/script>)/gi

link

Beside jQuery we can use this for other things like 'Include docs?', 'Install/init parcel?' and etc.

@vltansky I will put together some issues. I just had the thought recently during the 8.0.0 release. I also thought about moving away from grunt so that's another area where I'll generate some issues.

I tried to install jQuery with npm by using the command written in this document:

$ npm install jQuery

According to the npm WARM, maybe the command should change to

Sorry, I didn't understand your message. By subset do you mean ISO 639-1?

Yes, especially if we can let people type in something.

feat: lang select

The lang attribute (in no namespace) specifies the primary language for the element’s contents and for any of the element’s attributes that contain text. Its value must be a valid BCP 47 language tag, or the empty string. Setting the attribute to the empty string indicates that the primary language is unknown. [BCP47]

Here's the BCP 47 spec

https://tools.ietf.org/html/bcp47

I think we can safely use a subset. Can we let people who know better enter their own?

  • [ ] bug report
  • [ ] feature request
  • [ ] other (Please do not submit support requests here (below))

Notes:

  • Please do not use the issue tracker for personal support requests (use Stack Overflow).

  • Please do not derail or troll issues. Keep the discussion on topic and respect the opinions of others.

  • Please do not open issues or pull requests regarding the code in .htaccess, jQuery, Modernizr or Normalize.css (open them in their respective repositories).

Bug reports

A bug is a demonstrable problem that is caused by the code in the repository. Good bug reports are extremely helpful - thank you!

Guidelines for bug reports:

  1. Use the GitHub issue search — check if the issue has already been reported.

We have a long history of sometimes very detailed discussion of every line of code in the project. We want discussion, so it might still warrant an issue. It just helps to get the (sometimes extensive) context.

  2. Check if the issue has been fixed — try to reproduce it using the latest master or development branch in the repository.

  3. Isolate the problem — ideally create a reduced test case and a live example.

A good bug report shouldn't leave others needing to chase you up for more information. Please try to be as detailed as possible in your report. What is your environment? What steps will reproduce the issue? What browser(s) and OS experience the problem? What would you expect to be the outcome? All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs.

Example:

Short and descriptive example bug report title

A summary of the issue and the browser/OS environment in which it occurs. If suitable, include the steps required to reproduce the bug.

  1. This is the first step
  2. This is the second step
  3. Further steps, etc.

<url> - a link to the reduced test case

Any other information you want to share that is relevant to the issue being reported. This might include the lines of code that you have identified as causing the bug, and potential solutions (and your opinions on their merits).

Feature requests

Feature requests are welcome. But take a moment to find out whether your idea fits with the scope and aims of the project. It's up to you to make a strong case to convince the project's developers of the merits of this feature. Please provide as much detail and context as possible.

Celebrate 10 Years!

OMG we're going to be 10 years old

We're working on a new release to coincide with this project turning ten years old, but beyond that I'd like to actually celebrate this thing a little bit and as part of that I'd love to get some thoughts/ anecdotes/praise/love letters to share when I write up the release. I'd obviously love to hear from the core folks past and present (👋 @paulirish @necolas @nimbupani @drublic @mathiasbynens @alrra ) but anyone else who's ever contributed or consumed the project is more than welcome to reach out. You can hit me up privately or just share your thoughts below.

Actions/Release Test and fine-tune the release

I'm tired, so I'm just capturing a to-do list to vet the release process tomorrow. It works from end to end.

  • I created an annotated tag on the command line (See below, I forgot the
  • I pushed the tag.
  • The action caught the new tag, zipped up the dist folder and attached it to a newly created GitHub release.
  • The action also published the package to npm.

All of that worked. I think I will need to update the formatting of the release annotation, but otherwise it's all pretty good.

Open issues to clean up before Thursday/Monday (I'm aiming to release on Thursday, but will push it out to Monday if the blog post takes longer than I'm hoping.)

  • [x] Change the file name of the zip file to match previous versions. I forgot the html5-boilerplate_ bit.
  • [x] Figure out how to zip the dist folder without including the folder itself. Right now the folder contains the dist folder as a single child. We usually just have it be the contents of the dist folder. My brain will hurt after this, I think. Maintaining a project like this means I have to learn about a lot of stuff. Learning the complexities of the zip command is not the most exciting stuff I've ever had to tackle. If anyone wants to explain this to me like I've five, I'm all ears.
  • [x] Test the npm package via all the different methods (including the new npx command)
