A few of your favorite things

Step 8: Add a list

In this pull request, you'll learn about lists and emoji. You'll also list a few details in your resume.

:point_down: These are expandable dialogues! Click to open and see more information.

<details> <summary>Emoji</summary>

Emoji

Emoji are fun :sparkles:, and they can be silly :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:, but they can also be an important communication tool when working with remote teams ✅. Tone doesn't come across as clearly when reading text as it comes speaking face to face, and emojis can be helpful in conveying context and emotions. :heart:

Emoji are best used as additive extras, not replacements for text. With images, descriptive text makes it clearer for screen readers, but screen readers aren't guaranteed to convey the intent of an emoji. Make sure your meaning is clear in text, so emoji will help instead of causing more confusion.

Here are some examples of popular emojis in markdown.

What you see What you type

:smile: :smile:
:sparkles: :sparkles:
:tada: :tada:

For more information about available emoji, see this handy cheat sheet. In most text fields on GitHub, you can type : and then begin to type the name of an emoji. A fuzzy search will bring up the 5 best guesses and let you select one.

<details> <summary>Ordered Lists</summary>

Ordered Lists

Ordered lists have numbers. You can nest ordered lists within a list item by indenting them. You can read more about formatting and syntax in the GitHub Help.

1. Item 1
2. Item 2
3. Item 3
   1. Item 3a
   2. Item 3b
  1. Item 1
  2. Item 2
  3. Item 3
    1. Item 3a
    2. Item 3b

<hr> </details>

<details> <summary>Unordered Lists</summary>

Unordered Lists

To create an unordered list, use either the - or * character. As with ordered lists, you can nest a list by indenting two spaces.

* Item 1
* Item 2
  * Item 2a
  * Item 2b
  • Item 1
  • Item 2
    • Item 2a
    • Item 2b

<hr> </details>

Adding a list

Help people get to know you by adding a list containing a few of your favorite things. Don't know what to add? Why not add a list of your favorite books or places to eat.

:keyboard: Activity: Create a list

  1. Edit the _includes/04-lists.md in this pull request.
  2. Create a markdown list in the file. It can be ordered or unordered.
  3. Commit your changes.

Introduce yourself to the world

Step 5: Add an image

Now, you're going to add an image. You can add an image of yourself or anything else you'd like to feature. You'll also learn how to create descriptive text, or "alt text", for images, and how to create links.

Images

Let's add an image. Don't forget to include descriptive text in the square brackets. This text is read aloud for people using screen readers. It's also shown at times when your image doesn't display, such as when there's a poor connection. You can see the syntax for images below:

:keyboard: Activity: Adding an image

  1. As you did before, edit the file in this pull request.
  2. In the file, replace the content in _includes/02-image.md with the correct Markdown for your image of choice. Don't forget to include alt-text!
  3. Commit your changes.

Merge pull request #2 from nemophila1998/add-headers Give your portfolio a header

view details

push time in 3 months

PR merged nemophila1998/markdown-portfolio

Give your portfolio a header

Step 3: Add headers

As you saw on your website, your portfolio doesn't have much content yet. We'll learn how to edit the file in this pull request to incorporate some Markdown headers.

You can see an example of a header at the top of this page! Just like in HTML, a header is a larger bit of text at the beginning of a section. There are six sizes.

Example

# This is an <h1> header, which is the largest
## This is an <h2> header
###### This is an <h6> header, which is the smallest

How it looks

This is an <h1> header, which is the largest

This is an <h2> header

This is an <h6> header, which is the smallest

In issues, pull requests, and comments, you can use the text formatting toolbar.

The toolbar isn't available everywhere. When you edit a file, you must type the # symbols manually.

:keyboard: Activity: Edit your file with headers

  1. In this pull request, click the Files changed tab.
  2. In the upper right corner of the file view, click the small pencil ✏️ or hamburger ... icon to edit the file titled _includes/01-name.md.
  3. On the Edit file tab, add a #, followed by a space, before the content to make it an H1 Header. You can add more headers, using one to six # characters followed by a space.
  4. Above your new content, click Preview changes.
  5. At the bottom of the page, type a short, meaningful commit message that describes the change you made to the file.
  6. Click Commit changes.
