I think we do use an initial cap for the start of a sentence, but as a general rule I replaced with matching case

[TX2] dummy0 interface exists in hostOS

dummy0 interface appears to be created by the hostOS on TX2, thus the 'priviledged' check in container, performed by start.sh, fails during application start. ip link add dummy0 type dummy command fails in container because 'dummy0' already exists.

A general symptom is that udev rules are not being triggered in container.

It's necessary to check where and why this dummy interface is being created and then remove it.

Some service in warrior probably needs a condition to not run it in a virtualisation environment.

rngd and udevd were using quite a bit of cpu as well.

Upgrade to L4T 28.3.0

Hi, while waiting for #125, we have switched our base to L4T R28.3.0. This is largely the same as 28.2.1, but contains some essential fixes (includes fixing a memory leak in tegra mmapi).

We probably won't want to switch to 32.x now for a while now that we have a new stable base. Would it be possible to upgrade the version of L4T you use to 28.3.0?

contributing-device-support.md: update old names and URL links

This updates old resin names to balena in the document. This includes changing "intel" to genericx86-64. Some names like resin-image is left unchanged because they are not updated in the source code.

Also updates URL links to Yocto documentations to the "current" version.

PR merged balena-os/balena-fsl-arm

Reviewers
nitrogen8mm: ensure use of the default built-in environment
  • Ensure default environment is used in all cases - the one built into the boot binary.
  • Ensure the eMMC env, which may already be present at the end of the corresponding hw partition, cannot be altered from u-boot.
  • If correct partition, emmc offset and env_size are specified in the container fw_env.config, then the eMMC environment can be queried from the APP as well.

Sample container fw_env.config for an ENV_SIZE of 0x2000:

# Device 0x400000 - env_size env_size flash sector size
/dev/mmcblk0boot0 0x3FE000 0x2000 0x1000

Default bsp provided ENV_SIZE is 0x2000.

These restarts of containerd happened every 2min so I don't think they contribute to the io load. It's more likely that they were caused by that condition on the device... The beginning of the logs also show a panic from the engine which I guess stems from being aborted by healthdog (probably for the same reason)

But the logs show that it managed to come up after retrying a few times. Which points to the resources being available again...

kernel-modules-headers: Add needed kernel headers for NVidia Jetson TX2 Customers compiling out of tree kernel modules related to video camera will require headers from drivers/media/platform/tegra/camera. Also, customers building out of tree modules might also make use of dma-iommu.h and hypervisor.h and on the Jetson TX2 kernel (which is 64 bits) these header files actually include their 32 bits counterparts so let's add those too. issue closedbalena-os/balena-engine

balena-engine-containerd won't start, corrupted metadata db

balena engine failed to start on a device, with the error:

"Error starting daemon: failed to dial "/var/run/balena-engine/containerd/balena-engine-containerd.sock": dial unix /var/run/balena-engine/containerd/balena-engine-containerd.sock: connect: connection refused"

@robertgzr identified it as this moby upstream issue: https://github.com/moby/moby/issues/37238#issuecomment-395848005

We understand this issue was fixed in balena engine 18.x, so perhaps this issue could be closed. (A closed issue is still useful so we can point to it and gather more information.)

eth0: renamed from vethXXXXXXX

Symptom: internet connection does not work on eth0. Investigation and googling, and @majorz 's experience, points to "eth0: renamed from veth5e9821f" in dmesg as the "cause". The problem is "blamed on Docker", ergo balenaEngine.

issue commentbalena-os/balena-engine

eth0: renamed from vethXXXXXXX

veth interfaces are used to expose the host network interface to the containers in bridge mode, the logs just show what is happening when we populate the container network namespace.

the network manager on balenaOS ignores those virtual interfaces and shouldn't try to interfere here.

the problem that the host looses connection is most likely not related to balenaEngine / libnetwork managing virtual interfaces

Add jn30b carrier board for jetson nano

JN30B is being added as community carrier board, since these commits are based on the changes contributed by Willem Remie in branch: https://github.com/balena-os/balena-jetson/tree/port_boards_and_patches

Changes were re-grouped and formatted to follow standard commit guidelines.

This board cannot be tested currently on our side.

jenkins_build.sh: Switch s3cmd with s4cmd The resin-img docker image has changed to open-balena-base 8.0.0 which in turn is based on debian:buster. This version of debian does not include the s3cmd package in it's repositories anymore. Instead it provides a replacement package called s4cmd (https://packages.debian.org/buster/s4cmd) which "is intended as an alternative to the existing s3cmd tool, enhancing performance and support for large files, and coming with a number of additional features and fixes". jenkins_build.sh: Use canned ACL and remove obsolete option Since s4cmd does not have the "--acl-public" option we use the new --API-ACL option that allows us to set canned ACLs for the objects we upload to S3. We use the "public-read" canned ACL that does: "Owner gets FULL_CONTROL. The AllUsers group gets READ access." Also we remove the "--skip-existing" option which is not present in s4cmd. [proposal] Allow the ability to add custom udev rules to the hostOS

In some cases (working with cellular modems, etc) it is useful to be able to define some kind of custome udev rule which runs at startup before the containers start up. It would be great if people had the ability to add custome udev rules to the boot partition like they do for system connections and have the hostOS apply these at startup.

I would like to use this issue as a place to discuss the use cases for this type of feature and possible implementation details.
